Principal's Welcome
Welcome to Sylvester Greenwood Academy!
At Sylvester Greenwood Academy, our mission is to support students in getting back on track academically while preparing them for success beyond high school. As the credit recovery school for the West Contra Costa Unified School District, Greenwood provides students with the opportunity to earn the credits they need to graduate on time in a supportive and focused learning environment.
Our program offers accelerated courses, allowing students to complete the equivalent of a semester-long class in half the time. With new courses beginning each quarter, students have the opportunity to earn up to 140 credits per year, helping them make meaningful progress toward graduation.
Greenwood Academy is not a one-size-fits-all school. We serve students ages 16–18 who are committed to overcoming challenges that have resulted in credit deficiencies. Our goal is to help students reconnect with their education, rebuild confidence, and develop the skills necessary for success in college, career, and life.
Because we are a smaller alternative school, acceptance to Greenwood is not automatic. We carefully review each application and select students who demonstrate progress in key areas such as attendance, academics, and behavior. We are also committed to ensuring that our enrollment reflects fair and equitable practices in accordance with state and district guidelines.
At Greenwood Academy, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. My goal as principal is to ensure that everyone who walks through our doors—students, families, and staff—feels welcomed, valued, and supported. Our dedicated team is committed to helping students reach their full potential and achieve their goal of earning a high school diploma.
We are currently accepting applications for the 2026–2027 school year, and we look forward to partnering with students and families on this important journey.
Sincerely,
Phillip Johnson
